Elsie passed away on May 30, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by elegance, devotion, boundless adventure, and extraordinary culinary talent. Born on October 4, 1935, she lived a life that was rich in both experiences and love.
A vibrant and dynamic presence from her youth, she led her high school cheerleading squad as captain and was crowned Prom Queen her senior year. Her poise, capability, and grace seamlessly transitioned into her professional life, where she went on to work on the executive floor at U.S. Steel.
A woman of deep loyalty and familial devotion, she selflessly dedicated herself to caring for her parents in their later years. Following their passing, she embraced her adventurous spirit, touring extensively throughout Europe. It was a journey that undoubtedly fueled her lifelong love for world culture and exquisite food.
Her true passion and artistry were found in the kitchen. She honed her craft under the tutelage of the great James Beard himself, taking classes in his Greenwich Village home. While she loved to cook—particularly French cuisine—her ultimate mastery and greatest expertise lay in baking and pastry. She was a baker and pastry chef like no other, capable of creating absolute magic with flour and sugar. Her profound dedication to the culinary arts is beautifully reflected in her astonishing collection of over 6,000 cookbooks, a library that rivals that of any expert.
Following her adventures abroad and her culinary pursuits, Elsie embarked on a cross-country drive, eventually making her new home in sunny California. It was there that she shared a beautiful, enduring marriage with the love of her life, William "Bill" Potts, until his passing from cancer in 1996. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Lauren, who was her greatest joy. Elsie and Lauren were entirely inseparable, sharing a profound bond that went far beyond mother and daughter—they were truly best friends, spending the greatest parts of their lives by each other's side.
While she did not have grandchildren by bloodline, her heart had boundless room for family. She was a cherished, honorary member of the Diaz family, finding immense joy in the lives of Alexa, Ezekiel, and Lucia, who brought her endless light and happiness.
She leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love, exquisite meals, and beautiful memories. She will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of sitting at her table, and most especially by those who were lucky enough to be held in her heart.
