James Harvey Dial

Retired Chief Master Sgt, James H. Dial of Lompoc, California, a proud veteran of the United States Air force passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on March 7th, 2023. Known by his friends as Jim, he was born to Albert Dewey and Lena Lillie (Sullivan) Dial, in Grand Junction, Colorado on February 17, 1933.

Jim began his military career at the age of 15, volunteering to serve for his country. As he progressed through the ranks, he rose to Chief Master Sgt and was fondly called “Chief”. He oversaw the administrative activities within the Headquarters Squadron at numerous Air Force Bases, including Lajes AFB and Vandenberg AFB. He was also the Senior Enlisted Advisor. He retired as an E-9 Chief Master Sgt. in 1978 and made Lompoc his home. Among the many military distinctions, Jim received a Bronze Star, Viet Nam Service Medal, and Three Battle Ribbons.

After retirement, Jim worked with Academy Life Insurance and the Non-commissioned Officers programs on base. In his off time, you could find him rooting for his beloved Denver Broncos, on the golf course, playing cards, taking the occasional trip to the casinos, and traveling with friends and family.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Albert Dial and Lena Meyers; wife, Dorlene Dial; brother, Albert Dial; sister, Mildred Owens; son, James R. Dial and his wife, Cindy; daughter, Janet Gillespie and her husband, Robert; daughter, Julia Decker and her husband, Marty. He is survived by his wife, Linda Dial, sister, Pauline Scott, daughters, Jolene Romasanta, Jerilyn (Robert) Salveter, and Jill (Jeffrey) Whitson. He will forever be missed by his grandchildren, Joseph Lynn, Jessica Lynn, Anthony Romasanta, David Dial, Kimberly (Dial) Hurd, Robert Gillespie, Michael Gillespie, Shannon (Decker) West; Sophia (Decker) Kennedy, Marty Decker, Nathan Whitson and Jason Whitson; as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
