Jack Ronald Vedell, a longtime resident of Manhattan Beach, CA passed away on October 9, 2023, with his life partner Susan by his side. He was born on February 24, 1938 in Galesburg, Illinois. In one word, Jack was a quiet man. He was a brave, loyal, dependable individual who always showed up when it mattered, consistently had your back, and generously gave to those in need.
He was preceded in death by his parents,Torgney and Agnes (Kirby) Vedell, his brother Robert, and his sister KIKi Lagerlof. He is survived by Susan (Hemstock). Daughters Tamara Ortiz (Albert),Renee Brown (James), Erika Robison (Edward). He was a proud grandfather to Ana and Alex Ortiz (Kayla), Torre and Ryan Brown (Brianna). Additionally, he had a bonus family, Michael and Sandra Shields and grandchildren Ryan (Samantha), Cory, Hailey and great grandson Harrison. Jack also cherished his rambunctious nieces and nephews and the joy they brought to his life.
In his educational journey, Jack attended Burlington Iowa High School and went on to earn a BS in Business Economics from San Diego State University. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1968, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his country.
Throughout his career, Jack had diverse experiences. In his early years, he worked on his family’s dairy farm, “Vedell Dairy” which fueled his lifelong love for ice cream. Later he ventured into the Aerospace Industry, where he had the opportunity to work with esteemed organizations such as Convair, Salk Institute, and Northrop Grumman. Retiring in 2005.
In his free time, Jack enjoyed sports, live music, and golfing. He was a talented chef and loved singing songs he heard on the radio or turning his own words into a Johnny Cash medley. He was clever and could fix or build anything.
A celebration of Jack’s life will occur, reflecting his preference for simplicity. Details of the service will be determined at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer Foundation in Jack’s memory.
The Neptune Society in San Pedro, California is assisting the family with the necessary arrangements.
