Born and raised in Long Beach, he attended schools here, eventually graduating in 1942 from Polytechnic High School where he was active on the Track Team. After graduation he spent that first summer working at the Long Beach shipyard and most likely was still delivering newspapers for the Press Telegram. After he turned 18 (in November), he was inducted into the United States Army.
WWII occupied the next 3 years of his life... training, then sailing overseas in the fall of 1944, and ending up on the Omaha beachhead. He was trucked to the front lines of Belgium and Germany where he joined the 99th Division to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. By the middle of December he was reported as missing and eventually it was discovered that he was in a POW Camp (Stalag 13 C) in Germany. He had one escape attempt where he was recaptured. A second attempt later as the war started coming to an end, was successful, and after almost 4 months as a POW he finally made his way back to American troops. By May of 1945 he was back in the States and in November (on his 21st birthday) he was discharged.
In 1946 he went to work for the city of Long Beach as a Firefighter. He stayed with this career until he retired at the end of 1978. He worked up through the ranks spending 10 years as a Firefighter, 4 years as an Engineer, 17 years as a Captain and his last 2 years he served as a Battalion Chief. During these years he also went back to school and received his Associate's Degree in Fire Science from Long Beach City College.
In October of 1947 he married the love of his life, Beverly J Garrison, and together they raised 4 children, 2 girls and 2 boys! Many of those years Glenn was active with the Boy Scouts and as a family they traveled (camped) to many National and State parks in the U.S and Canada. Golfing was also a huge hobby for Glenn.
Upon retirement he and Beverly moved to Pebble Beach where they spent the next 45 years in the house they built there. They were active members of First Presbyterian Church of Monterey and together they traveled the world and the United States...many of those trips visiting family. They were married just shy of 70 years when Beverly passed away in July of 2017.
Glenn is survived by his 4 children and their spouses; Karen Shirron (Eddie), Connie Kuykendall (Bob), Michael Muis (Kathy), Jeffrey Muis (Bonnie), 8 of 9 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.
