William Russell Campbell passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, June 11, 2018 in New Braunfels Texas as the age of 87. "Rusty" is survived by his wife, Charlotte Kull Campbell, daughter Carla Heverly, her husband Todd and grandson Noah, all of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by his three stepdaughters, Chartee Pratt, Freida Duckworth and Geiget Luthi, who called him "Dad". A true Texan, Rusty was born Lucille Goode Light and Claude Russell Campbell on June 6, 1931 in Jennings, LA but as he told everyone with a big smile, "I got to Texas as quick as I could!" moving to Beaumont at the age of 3 months. He graduated from Sam Marcos Academy. With love of his country, he joined the U.S. Army serving in 10th Special Forced as Staff Sergeant during the Korean War. After serving his country he received his AA Degree from Allen Military Academy, his BS from Lamar State College and his Masters Degree in Education form Texas A&M University. He then became a firefighter at Beaumont Fire Department before becoming a history teacher and football coach at French High School in Beaumont. "Coach" as he was called by all who knew him was truly a beloved and well respected teacher, coach and friend. He was a role model for the young men and women he mentored on and off the field. After Retirement he volunteered as a child Advocate in Beaumont for many years. He also dedicated much of his time to the East Texas Historical Society. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018 at Saint Joseph's Anglican Church at 446 N. Seguin Ave. New Braunfels, TX 78130 and final interment of his ashes will be at Magnolia Cemetery in Beaumont which will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project or your local Humane Society to honor his beloved "Critters".
