

Dr. Guan received his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Peking University in 1997, his master’s degree in Statistics from Texas A&M University in 2001, and his doctoral degree in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan in 2010. He joined the University of Minnesota the same year and served as a Professor in the Division of Biostatistics & Health Data Science at the School of Public Health. Throughout his academic career, he was deeply committed to research, teaching excellence, and student mentorship. He was widely respected by colleagues and cherished by students for his patience, knowledge, and humility.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Guan was a quiet, kind, and devoted family man. He loved his family deeply and treasured the time he spent with them. In his leisure time, he enjoyed playing badminton, which brought him joy, friendship, and relaxation outside of his academic work.
He is survived by his loving wife, Yu Zhang; his daughter, Hannah Guan; and his son, Ethan Guan.
A memorial service will be held at 5pm-7pm on August 10, 2026, at West Metro Chinese Church, 3695 County Road 101, Plymouth, MN 55446. Colleagues, students, friends, and community members will gather to share memories and celebrate Dr. Guan’s life, work, and legacy.
