Stephen Peter Takas, Jr. of San Antonio, Texas passed away on April 24, 2025 at the age of 82. Stephen was born on December 14, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. Stephen was an “Air Force brat” and spent his formative years in Michigan, Louisiana, Georgia, Maine, New Jersey, Idaho, Texas, and Japan.
Stephen graduated from Price Catholic High School in Amarillo, Texas in 1961. He obtained a B.A. in Government from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas in 1965. Stephen earned his J.D. from St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas in 1968 and was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in that same year.
Stephen found his true calling in the practice of law. He was an assistant district attorney in the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office from 1968 to 1973; an attorney for James R. Gillespie, Inc. from 1974 to 1978; and a solo practitioner from 1978 to 2021. Stephen was certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Criminal Law from 1975 until his retirement. He appeared before the United States Supreme Court in 1987 in Satterwhite vs. Texas, where he and co-counsel Richard Woods obtained an 8-0 opinion in favor of their client, John Satterwhite, re-affirming a defendant’s right to consult with counsel before submitting to psychiatric examinations. Stephen served as a Municipal Judge for the City of Windcrest from 1980 to 2025, the City of Shavano Park from 1993 to 2021, and as an Associate Judge in the City of Schertz. Additionally, he was a member of the Criminal Law and Procedure, General Practice, Municipal Judges and Probate Sections of the State Bar of Texas as well as the Texas Municipal Judges Association. He was a past member of District 10 Admission Committee and Grievance and Ethics Committee of the State Bar of Texas.
In his free time, Stephen enjoyed spending time with family and friends in Rockport, Texas. He also enjoyed coaching girls' soccer and reading military history. He was the Chairman of the Building Committee for Saint John Neumann Catholic Church.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen P. Takas, Sr. and Louise A. “Lou” Takas.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 59 years, Majie, daughter Tricia Takas-Barker and husband Bob, daughter Stephanie Takas-Mercer and husband Tyler, and granddaughters Skylar Jackson and Riley Mercer.
The family would like to thank the staff at Carol Ann’s Home for all of the help and support they provided to Stephen over the last 9 months. The family would also like to thank Guiding Light Hospice for the care and compassion they showed Stephen in his final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life at Saint John Neumann Catholic Church, 6680 Crestway Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78239 on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. The Memorial Mass will be preceded by visitation with the family at 10:30 a.m. and the praying of the Rosary at 11:00 a.m.
