Sophye Marie Foley Hopper was born July 28, 1925, in Montgomery, Alabama and passed away peacefully on September 9, 2023 in San Antonio,TX at the age of 98. Predeceased by her Mother Gladys McDade, Father C.J Foley, son Blake Korman, sister Ferrell McDade Gilson, and Daughter-In-Law, Becky Boyd. Survived by her husband Bennie Hopper; Children Cindy Spencer, Carl Korman Jr, Raymond Korman; Grandchildren; Jennifer Mitchell (Joseph) and Sarah Saucier; Great Grandchildren Eric Watelski (Ashley), Penny and Reid Saucier, Great Great Grandchild; Alyson Watelski and many Nieces/Nephews and Grand-Nieces/Nephews from The Gilson family, and many Step-Children from the Hopper family. Upon graduating from Central High School Class of ’44 in Jackson, MS, she attended Auburn University. Sophye then entered The United States Cadet Nurse program at Hotel Dieu in New Orleans, LA and graduated as a Registered Nurse just as World War II ended. She was married and raised her children in Shreveport, LA. She then moved to San Antonio in 1976 as a single woman, working as an RN at Audie Murphy, BAMC, and VA Hospital. She retired in 1993 after 45 years as Registered Nurse. She volunteered 12 years as Ambassador at SATX Airport. During her last 5 years, her life stories were recorded and made into a book with pictures and then edited several times to her satisfaction. This Online Memorial will include pictures from her book of life, “I’m Just Soso”. Her ashes will be submerged in waters off both the Texas Coast and Kauai, Hawaii.
Activities/Hobbies: Sophye was always engaged and involved in multiple activities: Multiple social clubs, ballroom dance (winning second place in regional contests), telling stories of her love of life, gardening, playing cards/dominos, seasonal decorating, and traveling – and as always looking top notch in her colorful coordinating outfits and jewelry.
Special Thanks To: Vitas Hospice and Good Shepard Hospice who managed her health for over 5 years and to Serving Faithfully Assisted Living that treated her as their own family for almost the last 3 years. These people are true angels of God!
