Ruth Marie Untermeyer was born September 12, 1956 and passed away peacefully on March 10, 2025 at the age of 68 in the loving company of her daughter. She grew up in Austin, TX with 6 siblings, graduated from McCallum High School and attended school at The University of Texas.
Ruth came from very difficult, humble beginnings and ended up making a brighter life for herself and her daughters. She stayed very close to her siblings, loved her family immensely, and loved living in Fredericksburg with her cat - Lizzo. She was known to enjoy her alone time but still treasured concerts and lunches with old friends, trips to the beach with her siblings, and trips to Colorado. She loved getting thoughtful little gifts for people and texting her daughter to “go look at the moon!” so they could both enjoy it together, even if they lived in different cities.
Ruth was kind to people that life was unkind to. She was protective and caring of the people she loved. Many people know her as the sweet and loyal sister, friend, cousin, or Aunt and got to see her silly side that came out when she was comfortable. Her favorite thing was feeding people and bringing family together (even though she could hardly stand the crowds herself!) Others may know her as the most organized woman they knew, who could figure anything out and run any office with a high level of professionalism. She was a dream employee and valued doing the best job at whatever she was doing.
Whenever Ruth got something nice in life, she wanted to share it with the people she loved. If you needed a place to live, she would offer a room. If she had money, she would give it to you. She was passionate about charities helping families and children and was known to uplift people going through challenging times. She was so grateful to all the incredible people who had helped her along the way and continued to advocate for women’s rights and safety.
Ruth is survived by her daughters: Gayle and her husband, Thomas Gilner, and Robyn Taliaferro; her siblings: Elaine and Terry Sundwall, Mark and Cheryl Untermeyer, Ken Untermeyer and Kristie Dungen, Judy and Dennis Vanderhoof, and Joan and Jack Allen; her nieces and nephews: Frank, Jenny, Kristol, Sommer, Amy, Jill, Jordan, Jason, Amara, Kendyl, Shane, Dana, Kyle and Kaylee and their families; and her friends and roommates in the final years, Kay Syrus Untermeyer and Betty Coble.
In her honor, Ruth would like to be remembered in the Texas Hill Country, Estes Park Colorado, and Port Aransas beach. In lieu of a memorial, she wished that you would listen to Anne Murray and Kathy Mattea music by the fireside with loved ones.
