His journey home was lovingly attended by his children, whom he devoted his life to.
While many in the greater San Antonio area may remember his iconic voice resonating over the airwaves in the 1990s in between Tejano tracks, many never knew the long-lasting impacts of his contributions to the Tejano music genre and that his broadcasting reached far behind the scenes.
Bob is credited with establishing a stronghold among Spanish radio across the Texas market which can be still seen today.
Bob earned a multitude of recognitions during his 40 years of broadcast career; namely Billboard’s Radio Station of the Year under his direction and he also received the Program Director of the Year Award. Later, Bob started consulting KSAB Tejano, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Under his direction, KSAB rose to the number #1 radio station in only one year. His expertise in radio engaged scores of Chicanos in the US, especially Tejanos. This impact still can be seen today as KXTN sits within the top-rated radio stations in the San Antonio marketplace, using the strategy put in place by Bob decades ago. Bob worked as a Spanish language radio consultant lending his knowledge in Tejano stations across Texas.
Due to his expertise, Bob has also been featured in the country’s most prominent newspapers and trade magazines including: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Hispanic Business, Billboard, to name a few. Bob's many accomplishments destined him for recognition as he was inducted into both the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame and the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame.
Outside his career, Bob never stopped being who he was at the heart of life, a devoted father, grandfather, friend and community leader. To say Bob was a man of many talents is an understatement, as his broadcasting career ascended new heights, he forever maintained his home and children as his reason for working so hard to achieve all he did.
As a loving father, he always made his family a priority. Bob has as a calm, soothing presence even on hectic days. He attended countless ballet folklorico events and beauty pageants for his beloved daughters, Candace and Tiffanie, the jewels of his life; Bob cheered on at endless volleyball matches, football games and various sporting events as his children’s passions and interests varied. He mentored and guided his son, Eric Prado, in his own prominent DJ career. Bob’s enthusiasm for music can be seen as a living legacy in his son, Eric (DJ Mystik)., who is also known as a leader in the San Antonio music community.
We want to share with you some musings that are dear to our hearts. We remember a man infamous for waking his entire household to exaggerated bellowing of Frank Sinatra’s “Strangers in the Night”. This avid WWE fan could be found many evenings sprawled on the sofa celebrating the latest wrestling matches with a fresh batch of stovetop popcorn. Bob was never able to leave the house for a simple errand, as short trips often became multiple stops to chat with several people on the way to his destination. He was recognized and approached by new and old friends everywhere he went. Throughout the 90s and 2000s, Friday nights were ritually reserved for game nights with his children and often ended with bonding time watching Tales from the Crypt and eating together, as a family.
As his children became adults, he was their friend and confidant. This love extended to their own circle of friends, as his home on Woley Drive became an ever-welcoming sanctuary over the years with an open-door policy to many of the Westside community. As a grandfather, he has given his endearing love and passion for music to a new generation.
There is so much to share, but these are a few snapshots from a life well lived.
