Robert was born on April 29, 1934 in San Marcos, Texas to Patricio Martinez and Maria Gutierrez Martinez. Orphaned at an early age, he spent time as a young child in the care of Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital in downtown San Antonio, then with family in New Braunfels, where he would graduate from New Braunfels High School in 1954.
As a young man he met his beloved wife Consuelo “Chita” Flores, where they worked together at a small cafe. They soon moved to San Antonio, for a new beginning and to start a family. Robert went to work for Goodwill Industries, building a career that spanned more than forty years, from managing retail stores across the city, to eventually retiring as Chief Financial Officer. While working for Goodwill Industries, he earned a Business Administration degree from St. Mary’s University in 1980.
Robert loved music, and was a masterful guitar player, spending countless family gatherings accompanying all the “tios” and “tias” as together they sang their cherished valciadas, boleros, baladas, and other traditional Mexican songs, late into the night; creating unforgettable, deeply cherished memories.
Robert loved his children very much, raising four boys, and was a dedicated, hardworking and gentle family man who devotedly supported his children and wife. Imparting his talent and love of music to his boys, he and Chita loved nothing more than cheering on their boys at sporting and musical events.
Robert is preceded in death by his loving wife Chita and his eldest son, Oscar (and wife Elvira) Flores, his brother Felipe, and sisters Susie, Elisa and Beatrice.
Robert is survived by his sons David Flores Martinez, Ruben Robert Martinez (and wife Aimee Edmonds Martinez), and Hector Flores Martinez. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Jessica Marie Flores, Quincy Robertson and River Robertson Martinez, Catherine Olivia, Timothy Robert and Jason Gerald Michael Martinez, and Leila Theresa Martinez.
Robert's legacy is one of love, perseverance, family, and joy of music. From his earliest years, he overcame much suffering and tragedy, persisting into victory. His life is a melody that will continue to echo in the hearts of family and friends forever
