Philip Alvin Lindquist was born in the Township of Orange, New Jersey, on September 1, 1943, and died on June 23, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Jeannette Lindquist, of Toms River, NJ.
He and his siblings grew up in Bloomfield, NJ, and he graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1964. Philip enjoyed singing in the Boys Chorus and playing in the Marching Band. Upon graduation, he took employment in the Food Service Industry at the Prudential Insurance Company, Newark, NJ, and worked there for 36 years, earning their “Rock Solid Performer” award.
When he was in his late teens, he attended a Billy Graham Crusade in the area, and decided to place his faith in Christ Jesus for the rest of his life. This love and devotion to the Lord colored everything he did. His beautiful spirit, sincere kindness, honesty, integrity, strong work ethic, humility and faithfulness were a testimony to all who knew him.
In 1966, Philip met Sue at a Young People’s Square Dance at First Presbyterian Church, Rutherford, NJ, and married her at the same church on June 29, 1968.
They later moved to Nutley, NJ, and became members of Brookdale Baptist Church in Bloomfield. During his 26 years of membership at Brookdale, he served God’s people in many capacities- setting up classrooms weekly for Sunday School as well as other special events, light janitorial work, locking up the facilities nightly, volunteering in Christian Service Brigade (a type of scouting ministry for elementary aged boys), reaching out to others through visitation, caring for babies in the nursery, and ushering just about every time the doors of the church were open on Sunday mornings and evenings, and Wednesday nights.
Upon his retirement from Prudential in 2000, he and Sue moved to Toms River, NJ, to be nearer to his parents. He then began working in Supply at Community Hospital, and several years later, he worked as a Porter at Arbors Care Center. Almost immediately after they moved, they found a new church home at First Baptist Church, Toms River. During his 9 years there, Philip continued serving others in his local family of faith.
In 2009, he and Sue moved to San Antonio, to live nearer to their oldest daughter and grandchildren. He was an extremely proud Father and Grandfather. Phil and Sue made Wayside Chapel their next church home, and once again, Philip began to usher, volunteer in Vacation Bible School, and serve where he could. He faithfully kept in touch and encouraged the family and friends he left behind in New Jersey.
By the grace of God, even through his limitations, he was able to find the love of his life, marry, raise two daughters who he adored, hold a job for over 30 years, and was surrounded by many, many wonderful friends.
Philip is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ellen Susan Lindquist; his brother, Richard Lindquist (and wife Kathy) of Diamondhead, MS; his sister, Jude Lindquist, of Atlanta, FL; his daughters, Jeanne Lindquist and Carole Anne Payne (and husband James), of San Antonio, TX; and his grandchildren- Josh, Rebekah, Jhovany and Hannah Payne.
Philip Lindquist will be laid to rest at the Coker United Methodist Columbarium.
