Patrick J. Savage passed away from natural causes on 23 September 2019. He was born in October 1972 in Kincheloe Michigan to Patrick and Carolyn Savage. Pat liked to say this is the moment “a legend was born”. He did not stay there long, however, as his was a life of military moves.
He lived in many different places in his life but two of the most important were Miami Springs, Florida and Lajes Field Azores Portugal. The first place is where he lived during his younger years and enjoyed a simple life with parents, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Here he would be baptized, play in canals, and even sneak onto the golf course to take balls. Here he would also be tasked (along with sister Lena and cousins) with picking up seed pods and Shower of Gold sticks from the backyard, that his grandfather said he would pay him $0.01 for everyone picked up. It was amazing how a wheel barrel full of these things never amounted to more than $0.25. He often spoke of Miami Springs as one of his homes and had dreams of returning one day.
Lajes Field was where Pat moved when he was in high school and truly found himself. While there he enjoyed playing sports, learning to scuba dive, hanging out with friends, being a lifeguard and pool manager (which meant he was really in the gym playing basketball), and just enjoying life. He was known to put down quite a few papo secos (Portuguese rolls) and even more pregos (beef sandwiches). He was still in touch with many of the people he met there and they are his “Lajes Family”. This place was always special to him and stole part of his heart.
Patrick had over 17 years active duty service in the Air Force before he was medically retired due to a hip replacement. While serving, Pat was assigned to many overseas locations (his favorites were Patrick AFB Florida and Aviano AB Italy) during his career and also saw many deployments. It was one of his greatest joys serving in the Air Force with his fellow brothers and sisters-in-arms.
Another great joy in Pat’s life was returning to school as a student at the Galen College of Nursing. Anyone who knew Pat, knew this was surprising as he hated school. He had aspirations of becoming a nurse anesthetist and working at the Veterans Hospital.
Pat loved having some down time fishing and spending time on Canyon Lake with his father Richard and nephew Quint. He often said that a bad day on the lake was better than any day at work. He would often tell jokes and stories that would send his nephew home with very red, embarrassed cheeks!
While Pat had many things that brought him joy, the greatest happiness in his life will always be that of his children. He felt God had blessed him beyond measure when Caulin, Madison, and Noah entered his life. These children stole the other part of Pat’s heart. He is surely looking down on them and acting as their guardian angel.
Patrick is survived by his parents, Richard and Carolyn, his children Caulin, Madison, and Noah, his older sister Kathy and husband James Boyette, his younger Lena and husband Marcus Jackson, nieces and nephews Quint, Mackenzie, and Malaina Jackson, and Amanda Bentley, as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Patrick was preceded in death by his grandparents Elsford (EQ) and Ruth Ford, his grandparents Vince and Doris Savage, as well as his father Patrick Joseph Savage.
A memorial service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery when a date becomes available. We will send out a notification through social media to let everyone know the details. Pat will be truly missed and was a one-of-a-kind person. His infectious laughter, blond curly hair, and blue eyes will remain in our hearts and memories forever.
