Wednesday, July 28th due to complications after two neck/spinal surgeries performed the previous
week.
Born August 2, 1932, in Galveston, Texas, to Samuel and Florence Kemp, Patrick earned his Bachelor
of Arts degree in Economics and Business Administration at Rice University in 1953. By 1956, he was
designated a C.P.A. and received his Master's degree at the University of Texas in Austin. While an
Instructor at the University of Illinois (Urbana) for the ensuing three years, Patrick earned his Doctorate
in Accountancy and met his future wife (a student of his), Carol Margaret Boren. They were married in
August of 1959, shortly before moving to Atlanta, Georgia to teach at Emory University. He then
taught as a full Professor at the University of Richmond (Virginia), Virginia Tech in Blacksburg,
Virginia, and Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, before happily retiring.
Patrick loved his dogs and reading detective novels. He enjoyed listening to bluegrass and the music of
Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Ray Charles, among many others. During his life,
he was an avid (though often self-frustrated) golfer and an RV enthusiast. He and his wife, Carol, were
able to travel all over the United States in their motor home and especially enjoyed visiting our
National Parks. They also worked as docents, shopkeepers, and guides at various Oregon State Parks,
including a number of lighthouses along the Oregon Coast.
Patrick was also an active member of Bracken United Methodist Church. Before COVID hit us, he
enjoyed reading aloud a small part of services, acting in church dramas, and singing in the church choir.
Survivors include two brothers, blues musician Steve “Stevie DuPree” Kemp and Michael Kemp (of
American Kennel Club fame), a number of nieces and nephews, a son, Robert W. Kemp, and a
daughter-in-law, Elizabeth D. Kemp. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cathleen Anne Kemp,
in 1983, and his wife, Carol B. Kemp, in 2018.
