Oscar Andrew Garcia was called home by the Lord on March 17, 2017 at the age of 75. Oscar was a devoted husband to his wife of 50 years, Lucy Villarreal Garcia. He was a loving father to his daughters Traci Garcia (The Woodlands, TX) and Kelly Garcia (John Esparza) (Corpus Christi TX). He was an adoring and proud “Popo” of his four beautiful grandchildren--Travis Andrew (The Woodlands, TX), Kailey Mariah, Peachie, and Luke (Corpus Christi, TX).
He was preceded in death by his parents Francisco C. Garcia and Beatriz Rodriguez and his beloved grandmother Francisca Acuna Rodriguez. He is survived by his sister Olivia Garcia Ovalle (Oscar deceased); three bothers Orlando (Jean), Gerardo (Stella), Daniel Garcia and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Oscar was a man of many interests and was a lifetime learner. He was an amateur photographer who enjoyed taking pictures of his family and nature. He was an avid runner and cyclist. He participated in Beach to Bay for 18 years and cycled in the “San Antonio to Corpus Christi Ride” for 5 years. Ten years in a row he cycled in the “Hotter N Hell Hundred” in Wichita Falls, TX. He loved jazz and country music. He learned to play the guitar and took classes in gourmet cooking and photography. He spent many hours each day reading the Bible and dedicated his life to his Lord and Savior. He was a man of self-determination and drive accomplishing every goal he set for himself. He was an inspiration and a wonderful role model to his children and grandchildren.
He graduated from W.B. Ray High School in 1960. He enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve while attending high school. After graduation he joined the United States Air Force where he proudly served for 4 years as a Supply Service Analyst. He graduated from Texas A&I Kingsville in 1970 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and earned the national certificate for Purchasing Manager. This allowed him to work in the purchasing departments at various petrochemical and chemical plants in the surrounding Corpus Christi area for nearly 40 years. During this time, he made many friends, among them his best friends Rodney Rankin, Gus Cargile, and Eddie Dunn.
After retirement, Oscar and his wife moved to the hill country in Comal County in 2005 where they designed and built their dream home. Oscar loved the views and the wildlife he saw from every window in the house. Country living suited him just fine.
Oscar lived a full life. He was the personification of a kind heart and a brave spirit. He was well loved and admired by both family and friends. Throughout his life he faced many challenges head on and never allowed them to defeat him. He will always live in our hearts. His wife and family are thankful and honored to have been the primary focus of his life.
The Garcia Family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Hope Hospice in New Braunfels, TX for the care, support and prayers they provided to Oscar and his family. Thanks also go to Phyllis Fuchs, Tasha Wilson, and other caregivers who helped make Oscar’s last days as comfortable as possible and provided a shoulder for his wife to lean on during this very difficult time.
The funeral service and celebration of life will be held on April 7 at 11:00 am at Baruch HaShem Messianic Congregation Center on 16320 Huebner in San Antonio, TX. Burial will follow at 2:30 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
