April 21st, 1945 - July 2nd, 2023
Our dearly beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend passed in his sleep on Sunday, July 2nd, 2023. Our Lord granted him one last mercy - He always said, “That’s how I would like to go in my sleep.”
John loved his sons, Michael Patrick and John Joseph, and adored his granddaughters. John enjoyed the times he could spend with family, friends, poker buddies, and especially his sisters.
John is survived by his wife, Yolanda O. Speer, son John Joseph and spouse, Marcie; Grandchildren Lillyann and Mila Jane .Daughter-in-law Maribel Cisneros: Grandchildren Celeste V, Elena O, and his many nephews and nieces; sisters Kathleen Eversoll and Andrea Hibbard and their husbands and children; and his late sister’s husband, Dick.
His Loving son Michael Patrick Speer, grandchild Anthony Ray, parents Joseph and Kathleen Speer, and sister Julie Bardwil preceded him in death.
John was a proud Veteran. He served two tours during the Vietnam War as a Captain. He was awarded the following commendations & medals: Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster,Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four Service Stars, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with six devices.
While employed as Advertising Director at Time Warner, KGNS, and the Laredo News in Laredo, TX, he developed many dear friendships which he missed dearly.
John was always striving for knowledge and encouraged all he encountered to go to college and that there was always time to learn. Later in life, in 1990-1992, he completed his college degrees. He received a Master of Arts in English, History, and Sociology at Laredo State University while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. He was recognized in Who’s Who among students in American Universities and Colleges.
John was LOVED and ADMIRED by many and will be dearly MISSED, especially by AMAZON!
May he rest in peace; he will be forever missed and until we meet again.

Mass will be held on July 26th, 2023, at 9:00 AM at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church at 11150 Macdona Lacoste Rd., Atascosa, TX 78002. Interment will follow at 10:00 AM at the same address.
