On Monday, July 29, 2019, John Thomas Gladish, loving husband and father, passed away at the age of 74 after going into cardiac arrest due to complications from hip surgery. John was born on September 6, 1944 in Evanston, IL to Clifford and Catherine (Sullivan) Gladish. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War Era and was honorably discharged in 1968.
John’s job and love for San Antonio brought him to Texas in 1990 when he was transferred from Fort Sheridan in Highwood, Illinois to Fort Sam Houston. He was later transferred to work in the commissary system at Randolph Air Force Base and eventually retired from Lackland Air Force Base commissary system in 2001. John happily lived his remaining years in San Antonio, Texas.
John had a passion for all things country western and was rarely seen without his cowboy hat and boots. He had a very kind and compassionate spirit, was loved by all, and will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
John was preceded in death by his father, Clifford, and his mother, Catherine. John is survived by his wife Mary (née Merrill, McKerlie) Gladish, daughter Tina (Gladish) Wilkes, her husband Bob Wilkes and their daughter Kelsey Wilkes (granddaughter) of West Chicago, IL, one brother Jim Gladish and his wife Sue of Algonquin, IL, stepchildren Gran Eugene McKerlie and Angela Arlene (McKerlie) Aboud, grandchildren Aaysha (Aboud) Tkachenko, Gran Michael McKerlie, Jeelan Aboud, three great grandchildren Jaden, Maksim and Lelah, and nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 13715 Riggs Road, Helotes, Texas on Friday, August 23, 2019 at 11 o’clock a.m. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in memory of John T Gladish to the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org, phone 1-800-342-2383 or The American Heart Association at www.heart.org, phone 1-800-242-8721.
