John graduated from Bishop Miege high school in 1964. Following graduation, he served with the US Navy from 1964-1970. He attended the University of Kansas for two years and finished his advanced education at University of Texas, San Antonio where he earned an Accounting degree and passed the CPA exam. He married the love of his life, Marcia (Schibi) Gaines on April 11, 1975, in Prairie Village, KS. They celebrated 48 years of marriage.
John had a successful CPA practice in Helotes, TX for over 20 years. He was an active supporter of Helotes 4H youth and donated generously to the Walter Gerlach and Bexar County livestock shows. He loved BBQ and had a small catering business called Scooter’s BBQ and served at Helotes Market Days for many years. John was a parish member at St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville for over 20 years.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Nina Gaines. Surviving in addition to his loving wife Marcia are his sons Greg Gaines and his wife Sarah, son Grant Gaines and his wife Alyssa, son Taylor Gaines, and 4 grandchildren Lyla, Jack, Blakely, and Grayson Gaines; 3 sisters Peggy Bohrer, Marianne and Donna Gaines and 2 brothers Mark and David Gaines; along with many nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church (13715 Riggs Road, Helotes TX 78023) on Friday, July 7th at 11:00am. Celebration of Life to follow at Pedrotti’s Ranch, (13715 F.M. 1560) from 1pm to 4pm.
