LTC Dela Cruz spent 28 years in the Army Nurse Corps where he created innovative programs such as The Stress Management Unit at BAMC, one of the first nurse run units of its kind. His schnauzer, Jake, also served as the first therapy dog on this unit. In his capacity as a psychiatric nurse, he helped both patients and staff. He retired from the military in San Antonio, continuing his caring ways as a school nurse in HISD.
LTC Dela Cruz had many interests and hobbies. He loved going to the movies, the race track, and playing poker. His artistic interests included sculpting and acrylic painting. His love of dogs never waned, and he spent many hours at the dog park with his terrier, Spike.
Though he was born in Kansas, LTC Dela Cruz elected to remain in San Antonio to be close to his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Connie; children, Jenna and Andrew; daughter in law, Yolanda; and grandchildren, Mark and Rachel. He is also survived by his four sisters: Juanita, Pauline, Liz and Minnie.
LTC Dela Cruz requested that no services be held. He was cremated, and by choice, his ashes will be scattered by his immediate family.
