Dear Ira,  What a gift you were to me and so many.  You were a mentor and a friend.  I will never forget our trip to New York City many, many years ago.  You were a person of great integrity and with a contagious laugh that brighten the day. May you rest now in God's loving embrace.

I met Ira while doing research for my dissertation at the Texana/Genealogy Department of the San Antonio Public Library, where he was a volunteer. He was invariably cheerful and friendly, and uniquely able to get the balky microfilm readers and printers to work. He made working there a joy.

Ira was a good friend to me as a young aspiring psychologist in DC.

As a protestant chaplain and fellow staffer for more than a decade at St Elizabeths Mental Hospital in Washington, DC I was energized by his wit,  humor and readiness to recount Civil War highlighted generals and battles.

Ira and his sister were visiting the State Cemetery in Austin Texas and looking at the Texas Handbook Volume B. My wife and I were there viewing Captain Jesse Billingsley's grave and we stopped in to view Volume B and met Ira and his sister. Ira was shocked to see me to say the least. I too was shocked to learn Ira was looking for information on Captain Jesse Billingsley. We talked while walking to view Jesse's grave and Ira educated me on our relationship. After a few hours we parted ways and hoped to greet each other again some day. A few months later the wife and I were visiting Old Town Bastrop. I walked past a shop that the door was open and something made me glance in when passing. I glanced for a half second and Ira was at the counter and happened to glance out at the same time. Yep...we met again and talked for a couple hours while visiting shops. As Ira always said when we met...It was meant to be. Well...my eyes are starting to leak so I will end here ...can't see very well. God bless you Mr Ira...hope to see you in Heaven. Always your friend...Randy Billingsley

Please accept my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends for the passing of your dear loved one. Losing a loved one in death is never easy. One day many will have the opportunity to live again. May the hope of everlasting life sustain and comfort you during this difficult time (John 17:3).

Ira and I were extremely close friends throughout our seminary days. That friendship has remained solid through all of these ensuing years despite the physical distances that separated us. Phone calls, letters, emails and even a couple of visits made present his gregarious laughter and his in depth discussion ready mind. He is sincerely missed. His death on El Dia de Los Muertos is noteworthy.

Ira Lott was an extremely kind and giving man. He has left behind a large void for those who knew and loved him.
