George Ernest Woelfel Jr, passed away surrounded by the ones he loved on March 19, 2017 at the age of 72. He was born on January 14, 1945 in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating from college, he joined the Air Force and tried out the rest of the country for a few years, spending the most time in Colorado, but also touching down in California and New Mexico. Eventually, George returned to the city of his birth, where he bought a home and taught math in the San Antonio public schools. He then worked for the United States Postal Service until he retired.
Two of the most consistent themes in his life were connection to his family and extended family, and interest in his German roots. He was a devoted son to his father George and mother Norma, calling or visiting them frequently, particularly after they took up residency at Morningside Ministries. He stayed in touch with his aunts, uncles and cousins both stateside and in Germany, investigating and charting genealogy, often with the help of other relatives. He made large notebooks with family pictures for his sisters and nephews. He lovingly preserved family history and shared it with all.
Late in his life, at around the time his mother Norma died, he met and married Maria Francisca Escobedo, the love of his life. You’ve never seen a couple who enjoyed each other’s company like they did. They traveled quite a bit and built a very welcoming home together. They shared time- and oranges- with each other and with Frances’ five children, thirteen grandchildren and one great granddaughter. It was impossible not to see the love they shared. He was truly happy. Although it doesn’t seem right that their years together were cut short, it seems so very right that the gift of love was theirs to share.
And so we say farewell to a good man who lived his life well. May his memory be tucked in warm places and his gift be shared broadly with those he loved.
Arrangements under the direction of NEPTUNE SOCIETY - San Antonio, San Antonio, TX.
