George Michael Provost

Mike was born in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1949 to Charles Edward and Cleo Provost. He graduated from Bridge City High School in 1968 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in February 1969, beginning a career of service that would span more than four decades.

Mike married Phyllis (Petry) Provost on March 31, 1973, beginning a marriage that would last over 53 years. During his 23 years in the Air Force, he served as an Avionics Electronics Navigation System Technician before earning a direct commission as an officer in the Medical Service Corps. He went on to hold leadership roles in Air Force medical administration at bases across the United States, as well as in Thailand, Guam, Germany, and the United Kingdom, rising to the rank of Major. Along the way, he earned a bachelor's degree from Methodist College, a master's degree from Webster College, and an MBA with High Honors from Oklahoma City University. He retired from the Air Force in March 1992.

Mike went on to a second career in public health and emergency management in San Antonio, first with the Bexar County Medical/Psychiatric Department and later with University Health System, where he served as Director of Emergency Preparedness until his retirement in 2009 after 40 years of full-time employment. He also served as a Colonel in the Texas State Guard and was active for many years in Republican Party leadership in Bexar County, including serving as a Presidential Elector for the State of Texas in 2004.

Faith was central to Mike's life. He was ordained a Deacon in 2001 and as a minister in 2014, going on to lead Sunday church services for many years at the Legacy Senior Apartments. He was also a longtime member of The Gideons International and preached at Madison Hills Baptist Church, one of the most joyful events in his life.

Mike's greatest joy was his family. Mike devoted his life to his wife and best friend, Phyllis; he cherished the life they had built together. His daughter, Brenda, passed away in May 2002. Each anniversary of her death, Mike would honor Brenda’s memory with prayer. Mike loved his son, Charles, and was very proud of the man and father he became. Mike’s grandchildren, Maelynn and Odin, brought him more love and joy to his life than he could ever have imagined.

Mike is survived by his wife, Phyllis Provost; his son, Charles Provost, and daughter-in-law, Amira; and his grandchildren, Maelynn and Odin Provost. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda, who passed away in 2002.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Madison Hills Baptist Church, 15413 O'Connor Rd, San Antonio, Texas.
