George Moore, age 78, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. George was born on November 25, 1947, in Harlem, New York, to Nora Moore and George Harry White II. He was lovingly raised by his grandparents, Elsie and Eugene Moore, whose influence shaped the course of his life. Their love, guidance, and eventual adoption of George became a foundational part of his story.
George proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970, including deployment during the Vietnam War. For his courage and sacrifice, he was awarded the Purple Heart, a reflection of both his bravery and his willingness to serve others at great personal cost.
George dedicated much of his professional life to serving others through education and mentorship. He worked as a teacher and educator in New York City schools and with the Board of Education, investing in the lives of countless students. He continued his career in public service with the New York State Department of Corrections, from which he eventually retired.
A lifelong coach and mentor, George poured his life into the game of basketball—and into the people around it. His coaching journey took him across the country, including time at St. John’s University, Medgar Evers College, Thomas Jefferson High School, and San Antonio Christian School, along with countless summer leagues, camps, and programs nationwide. He also served as a basketball referee, a role he carried with pride—and, as many who coached alongside him would say with a smile, even while coaching he never quite stopped being a referee. To many, he was more than a coach—he was a steady voice, a mentor, and a man who believed deeply in those he led.
Above all, George loved his family. He shared 15 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Anna, whom he cherished deeply. He was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who found immense joy in the lives of his children and the generations that followed.
George also had a deep love for Jesus, His Church, and His people. Since 2012, he had been a faithful member of Community Bible Church, where his presence and encouragement impacted many.
He had a passion for music—especially jazz—and was rarely without a song, a rhythm, or a
conversation about the greats.
George was preceded in death by his mother, Nora Moore; his father, George Harry White; and
his grandparents, Elsie and Eugene Moore.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Anna Moore; his children, Laprena Harrison (Rodney),
George Moore II (Scarlett), Lenora Moore, and stepson Alex Gallegos; his grandchildren,
Amber, Tayra, Kaia, George III, Madison, Nathaniel, Natalia, and Sasha; and his greatgrandchildren,
Christian and Kennedy.
