After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, he pursued his passion for singing. He was a member of the San Antonio Mastersingers, performing with the San Antonio Symphony. He later attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland, where he met the love of his life, Carol. They married on December 4, 1971.
His medical career started in Berwick, Pennsylvania, as an orderly, where he became interested in nursing. He pursued this interest and became an RN, graduating from the Nanticoke College of Nursing. Not long after his first son was born, he moved back to his hometown of San Antonio. He worked as an RN for more than three decades at RIOSA Rehabilitation Hospital and later at the San Antonio State Chest Hospital, now known as TCID. After retiring from full-time nursing he continued to work part-time in home health for as long as he could.
He valued time with family, especially with his granddaughters who knew him as Pop Pop. He enjoyed cooking, western films. He enjoyed fishing trips with his sons in their youth and catching countless Spurs and Cowboys games with them on TV. He enjoyed attending musicals with his wife when they came to town. He was an animal lover and cared for several family cats over the years. He also was an active member of First Baptist Church San Antonio. He was a loyal member of the choir and participated in volunteer programs.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
He is survived by his wife of almost 52 years, Carol Greene, sons Christopher Greene and David (Michele) Greene, granddaughters Kaylee (Jeric Macaculop) Greene, Emily (Tyler Rogers) Greene, younger brother Mark (Dani) Greene, sister-in-law Deborah Monahan, nephew Samuel (Kseniya) Greene, niece Rachel (Philip Roth) Greene, brother-in-law Richard Trostle. He is preceded in death by his brother Vernon Greene and parents Leaward and Evelyn Greene.
The Greene family would like to thank 32 Heavenly Hands for the medical care and compassion they gave him during his final days.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, December 1, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of San Antonio chapel, 515 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, TX 78215.
