Gary Charles Wenzel

Gary Wenzel, of San Antonio, Texas passed away peacefully on August 4 at 8:45 p.m. after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and lived a remarkable life filled with family, education, adventure, and a commitment to inspiring others.

Gary earned his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Penn State University, continuing a lifelong passion for education and leadership. His career began as a high school English teacher in New York before advancing to become a principal and later a professor of Educational Leadership at the State University of West Georgia. Throughout his career, Gary presented on educational leadership locally, nationally, and internationally. He also served as School Improvement and Rural Education specialist with the Georgia Department of Education.

A gifted storyteller and lover of language, Gary had a deep appreciation for classic literature and poetry. He could recite passages from memory and had a remarkable ability to bring stories to life with humor and vivid detail. His encouragement, positivity, and wisdom left a lasting impact on students, colleagues, friends, and family.

Gary also embraced adventure throughout his life. He wrestled in high school and college and enjoyed camping and canoeing with his brothers and friends. Among his many accomplishments, he climbed Mount Everest, reflecting his determination, courage, and adventurous spirit.

Above all, Gary treasured his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine Roberts; daughter Jill Jacoby and her husband, Neal Jacoby, and grandchildren Adeline, Dublin, and Kallen; stepdaughter Lauren Tompkins and her husband, Scott Tompkins, grandchildren Dylan, Nathan, and Piper, and great-grandchildren Aveline and Emiko; and stepson Stephen Patti and his wife, Mira Estaphanous Patti, and grandchildren Talia and Carter. He is also survived by his brother Tom Wenzel and his wife, Celeste, and their family.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Katherine Wenzel; his brother, John; and his sister, Caroline.

Gary lived a life defined by curiosity, kindness, humor, and unwavering positivity. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched and the stories he shared.

He will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday, August 24 at St Padre Pio Church, Bulverde Pkwy, San Antonio Texas.
