He graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1965, and then served in the Army Reserves for 8 years. In 1966, he met the love of his life, Betty Klabunde, at Anhalt Dancehall, and they married in 1969. Fred worked as a ranch foreman, machinist, and private security officer until he found his passion for firefighting.
He was a founding member and volunteer firefighter in the Leon Springs Fire Dept. for 12 + years, then a 25-year full-time firefighter, paramedic, peace officer, and arson investigator for the Leon Valley Fire Dept. until his retirement in 2006.
He loved hunting, fishing and watching his kids/grandkids' activities. His favorite times are dancing with Betty to old classic country music.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty; their children, Carlin (Susan), Corey (Stacie), and Chrysti; grandchildren (Carlin) Blake, Grant & Chloe; (Corey) Mason, Hayden & Heston; siblings Virgil Friar and Darlene (CD) Lewis; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of wonderful friends. He was also Godfather to Lisa Beath Blank. He is preceded in death by his parents JV and Fritz Friar; sister Mary Friar Lincoln; and nephew Larry “Tinker” Carmack, Jr.
The family would like to thank Dr. Manuel Quinones, his staff, and All County Hospice for their care and compassion in his final days.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 1pm, St. John Lutheran Church in Boerne, TX. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred’s honor to the Boerne Volunteer Fire Department at boernefire.org.
