FANNIE LOUISE COSTON CAMPBELL, known to her grandchildren as, “Momma Lou” - was born in San Antonio, Texas, April 24th, 1926. She attended elementary schools there and graduated Thomas Jefferson High School in 1944. During the war years she collected recyclables and participated in school dances given to boost morale of servicemen. She herself was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Girls Cadet Corp. After high school she spent her first collegiate year at Texas State College for Women in Denton, then transferred to University of Texas in Austin, where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority, also participating in several intramural sports teams, music and literary clubs. She graduated in 1949, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Afterwards she lived in Corpus Christi with her Uncle and Aunt while working at the PPG labs. She met William T. (Bill) Campbell, who also was a student at the University, and they were wed in July 1950. His work took them first to Louisiana, then Denver, Colorado and Briarcliff Manor, New York. She was employed by Union Carbide and contributed to research projects that honored her with recognition on several chemical patents. Eventually returning home to Texas in 1982, she continued to raise their three children with love, attention, and great understanding. She marveled at nature, loved gardening and music, but her favorite was walking on the beach in search of shells and sharks teeth. She was a wonderful cook and made the best cheese enchiladas with her own sauce - always made from scratch. She sewed our Easter dresses when we were little and had a true gift for quilting. She took great peace in reading her Bible; her deep abiding faith was a comfort to us all.
Gone before her, is Bill, her husband of 67 years; her mother, Fannie Mae, father, Ralph, and brother 'Buddy'. Remembering her with special love and affection are her children Cyndi Campbell Hitchcock & husband Hugh; Dr Bill Campbell & wife Lisa; Sandy J Campbell. Grandchildren Chris Hitchcock & wife Aliyah; Tim Hitchcock; Justin Campbell & wife Caitlin, great-grandson Clark; Laura Ann Campbell Roberts & husband Spencer; and many, many other family members and friends. August 9th 2023, as dawn was lighting the morning sky and birds beginning to sing, our precious Mother went home to her Lord.
