Dorothy was born on August 21, 1939, in Buffalo, New York, to Loren and Elisabeth Aamodt and moved with her family to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in her early years. While in Minnesota, she graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis and received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Gustavus Adolphus Collage in St. Peter, Minnesota. Dorothy and Dean were married on May 17, 1969, and traveled the world together with their daughter, Shannon, until Dean’s Air Force retirement in 1988. In the years following, Dorothy and Dean lived in Austin, Texas and later, Schertz, Texas.
Dorothy had a lifelong passion for music. Her love of music began in church choirs as a child and continued through her involvement in The Gustavus Choir during college. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, she was a member of Sweet Adelines International choruses and quartets, as well as numerous church choirs. In 1977, Dorothy was a member of the International Champion Gem City Chorus of Sweet Adelines, competing against choruses from around the world in London, England. Most recently, she was a member of the Schertz Silver Serenaders chorus. Dorothy also shared her love of music with young people as the director of several children’s choirs during her husband’s Air Force assignments in Germany and Mississippi.
