David George Wimberly was born on December 1, 1965 to William S. “Snap” Wimberly, Sr. (deceased) and Georgia Mae Ivey Wimberly (deceased) in Cincinnati, Ohio. When David was in elementary school his parents moved the family to Midway, Kentucky where David met many friends and grew into a young man. David enjoyed a wonderful and rambunctious childhood with his siblings, William S. “Butch” Jr., Winifred (deceased), and Ivey (deceased). As a child he wore a three-piece suit and a smile to church every Sunday, this fashion statement would change over the years to polo shirts, lounge pants, and tattoos (not to mention a few piercings!). He was an excellent student, graduating from Woodford County High School in 1984 where he was in band and was a National Merit Finalist. He moved on to the University of Kentucky where he learned to work with computers and developed technical skills that would serve him well.
The move to Midway was only the beginning of David’s moves from city to city, and state to state. David's professional pursuits as a data processor and computer programmer took him across the map, from Anchorage, Alaska, to Virginia, Rhode Island, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Michigan, Louisiana, Maryland, California, Nevada, and his favorite state of Texas holding a special place in his heart. Amidst his nomadic lifestyle, David's constant companions were his beloved dogs, his cherished "fur babies," who faithfully journeyed alongside him through every new city and state. He also took care of pet snakes, fish, lizards, and other “tank dwelling” creatures. In each place, David made new friends, connected with family members, and shared his wit, lively sense of humor, and sometimes sarcasm!
On Friday, January 12, 2024, David suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. Prayerfully, he is enjoying his final move, rejoicing with his parents and sisters who preceded him in death, as well as his deceased grandparents Alberta Ivey Christian, George Ivey, Sr. (Pauline), George Wimberly, and Annie Mae Perry Wimberly. He also has been reunited with his deceased uncles and aunts Paul Wimberly, Moses Wimberly, Taylor Wimberly, Willie Wimberly, George Wimberly, Jr., Annie Mathis (Henry), Johnnie White (Willie), George Ivey, Jr., Arthur Ivey, Morris Ivey, John Bennie Ivey (Trudy), Willie Lee Jackson (Doris), Clarence Ivey, and twins Gladys and Gloria Ivey.
David is survived by his best friend and life-partner, Eric Petre, brother, William “Butch” Wimberly Jr., and brother-in-law, Lawrence Williams. He will always be cherished by his remaining uncles and aunts Arnell Holmes, Lovey Ross (Henry), Willie “Uncle Pip” Reynolds, and Mary Reynolds, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Although we are saddened by David’s passing and deeply miss him, we celebrate the life he lived and the many lives he touched on his earthly journey. May we all delight in knowing we will be reunited when we move to our final destination!
