Daniel Loren Nelson

Dan was born on March 27, 1952 to Clifford and June Oen Nelson in Thief River Falls, MN. Dan graduated from Alhambra HS in 1970. Attended Glendale Community College until 1972 when he received a full scholarship for Golf at Pan American University,, (UTRGV), earning a double Masters in Business Administration (‘74) and Physical Education (‘79).

After graduation, he started his first job at South Jr. High School in Edinburg, TX as a typing teacher and golf instructor, kickstarting a 26 year career in education. In addition, he worked with the South Texas PGA Jr Golf for many years and won a Special Services Recipient award in 2002.

In 1974, Dan married Diana Garza in Brownsville, TX. Dan and Diana raised their 2 children, Jennifer and James. They divorced in 2001. In 2002, Dan married Marsha Lynne Bloomer Cleghorn Gamel in Cabo San Lucas, Baja Sur, Mexico.

Dan retired as head coach in 2004 from Edinburg HS. He spent the remaining 21 years playing golf, the sport he loved, and traveling the world with Marsha. Dan was a dedicated step-father to William & Richard Cleghorn as well as a proud grandfather of 5.

Dan was predeceased in death by his brothers: James & Raymond Nelson. He is survived by step-brother:Van Odegaard & wife, Carole their children,Charlie and Nick and nieces, Vicki and Tammy. Sister-in-law, Dianne Nelson; nephew, Michael; nieces, Candy and Cindy Nelson. Sister-in-law and husband, Richard & Marilynn Moscrip-Garcia. Daughter-in-laws, Delma Robles Nelson, Anitra Hernandez, Michelle Nissen Cleghorn, Chelsey Risica Cleghorn. Grandchildren, Stryker & Melody June Nelson; Gabriella Hernandez; Cheston & Cason Cleghorn.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Project Insight, a 501c3 non-profit, for which he was treasurer since 2004. www.project-insight.net
