Cheryl Lee (Landry) Johnson, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and the steadfast anchor of her family, passed away on June 26, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on November 25, 1944, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Robert B. and Carol A. Landry, Cheryl lived a vibrant life defined by deep faith, an expansive heart, and a joyful spirit. As her loving husband of 60 years, Larry, so perfectly put it: *"The only thing that's changed is her address."*
For decades, Cheryl was the undisputed Commander in Chief of the Johnson household. As a devoted Navy wife, she gracefully survived 22 of Larry’s three-month-long submarine patrols, holding down the fort with incredible strength and resilience. She was the kind of woman who knew how to change the oil in the car while simultaneously giving her daughter, Michele, a childhood filled with pure magic. From braving a terrifyingly rickety Ferris wheel cage together to pretending to be "flying bears" on cross-country road trips, Cheryl turned ordinary life into a grand adventure. Her nurturing spirit knew no bounds; over the years, she became a surrogate "Mom" to all of Michele’s friends and countless young sailors who needed a welcoming home away from home.
Cheryl was a woman of many magnificent layers. She played the piano beautifully, sang like an angel, and brought endless smiles to the people around her. Despite moving all over this beautiful country, her favorite career chapter was running the family DJ business in Bremerton, Washington, where she spent her time lighting up weddings and Navy base club gigs, simply because she loved to dance and share music. When she wasn't on the dance floor—or surprisingly mastering her favorite video games—she poured her love into meticulously crafting homemade cards to celebrate the milestones of her family and friends.
Cheryl is now joyfully reunited in Heaven with her parents, Robert and Carol Landry. Her beautiful, steadfast legacy lives on through her devoted husband, Larry W. Johnson; her daughter, Michele Johnson-Baty, and son-in-love, Michael Baty; her grandson, Joseph Cannon, and granddaughter-in-love, Sarah Cannon; and her precious great-grandson, Hunter Cannon. She will also be deeply missed by her siblings: Barbara Gauger, Robert (Bobby) Landry, Marilyn Franklin, Cindy Gauger, and Michele Sorenson, as well as a lifetime's worth of friends who became family.
Celebrations of Cheryl’s remarkable life will be held at a later date in both San Antonio, Texas, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Cheryl’s honor to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (www.t2t.org), a nonprofit organization close to their hearts that honors America's first responders and veterans by providing mortgage-free housing, scholarships, and vital support.
