Patterson died June 13 at his home in San Antonio. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughter Rachel and sons Chuck, Christopher and Sean Patterson and his wife, Kelly; brothers Jim, Robert and Marvin Patterson; grandchildren Jacob, Ariah, Sydney and Kaitlynn Patterson, Alex Garza and Brianna Bennison. Other survivors include members of his wife's family, who appreciate both his quiet strength and his willingness to be an integral part of an extended family.
Patterson was born Oct 5, 1947 in Freer, Texas, to Horace Patterson and Frieda Corinne Smith Patterson.
After being graduated from Monahans High School, Patterson attended New Mexico State University. He joined the United States Air Force in 1968, serving in England, Vietnam, Korea, Micronesia and various stateside bases in his career field of civil engineering before retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1995.
After his military retirement, Patterson worked in the private sector until 2000 when he and other military retirees, veterans and investors founded Alpha Facilities Solutions. During his time with Alpha, Patterson traveled extensively assessing facilities at government installations around the world. He retired in 2016, but continued to work part time for Alpha, where he was affectionally known as Pappy, until his death.
Patterson will be remembered as a modest man, with a dry wit who was loving, kind, generous and always willing to help family, friends and neighbors. The world was a better place when he was in it, and a smaller one now that he has gone.
