Bernadine Ann Voss Grothues, affectionately known as Bernie or Annie, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of May 11, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 76. Born in Seguin, Texas, on May 22, 1948, she was the third of five children of Rudolph (Rudy) Voss and Bianca Schwab.
Bernadine was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, James and Robert. She is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, Henry (Harry); daughters Carrie Mask (Kirk), Shannon Glover (Blake), and Lisa Keller (Jason); son Tyler Grothues (fiancée Kaylee); grandchildren Grace Hartman, Carson Mask, Morgan Keller, Jordan Keller, and Calden Glover; and her beloved sisters Diane Moltz and Mary Irwin (Barry).
A graduate of Navarro High School and Texas State University, Bernadine began her professional life in medical technology. After marrying Harry in 1974 and settling in Bulverde, Texas, she chose to devote herself to raising their family. She approached motherhood with boundless energy and love, and it wasn’t long before she extended that same care to other children, running an in-home daycare with the same standards of discipline and compassion she gave her own children.
Her days were filled with laughter, learning, and outdoor play, providing countless children with a joyful and nurturing environment. Many of those children, now grown, would return over the years to express their gratitude and share cherished memories. Bernadine also served as a substitute teacher and was deeply involved in her children’s school activities. When the grandkids came along, she cared for them and made time to take them to the park, on a picnic, and load them up with treats. She was always ready to go and do!
Bernie had a passion for sports (playing them, not watching), nature, and adventure. A natural athlete and fierce competitor, she played sports throughout high school and beyond, coaching little league softball and participating in community teams. She loved hiking, working in her yard, nine-pin bowling, and dancing to country music, polkas, and waltzes—especially with Harry, as often as they could. After Harry’s retirement, they embraced travel, exploring many countries and cities together with friends, family, and on cruises and motorcoach tours.
Bernadine’s strength, joy, and dedication touched many lives. While her passing leaves a deep void, her family takes comfort in knowing that her suffering from cancer and Parkinson’s has come to an end. She is now at peace, her vibrant spirit free once more.
She will be dearly missed and forever loved.
