Amar Soojhai of San Antonio, Texas passed away on January 10th at the age of 62. He was born in Trinidad & Tobago into a large family. He was the 7th of 8 children. At age 15, after his father passed away, his mother moved him and his youngest sister to the United States to live with their older brothers.
He graduated from Pasaic High School in New Jersey in 1982 and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force. Amar proudly served the USAF for 12 years and very much enjoyed his 2 tours in Germany. He worked on Communication Towers, as a Heavy Equipment Operator and was trained in Asphalt, Concrete and Pavement.
Upon exiting the military Amar began a 29-year career with the City of San Antonio Aviation Department. He wore many hats over the years from Heavy Equipment Operator to Airfield Supervisor, Streetside Supervisor, Baggage Handling System Liaison, and ending with Facilities Maintanence Coordinator.
Amar was preceded in death by his parents, Kahni and Dolly Soojhai, and 2 brothers, Kenny and Harry Soojhai. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Paula Emerson, their daughter Maya Soojhai; his siblings, Rabie Ramjattan, Ambie Soojhai, Indrell Soojai, Ron Sujai, Radika Obara and many nieces and nephews.
Amar’s passions included music, DJing, cooking, BBQing, mechanics, yardwork and floating in the pool. His happy place was at the beach and soaking up the Texas sun in Port Aransas. While raising his daughter he was actively involved in the St. Gregory School Community and enjoyed coaching soccer, assisting with softball, grilling at school events, serving on the School Council and being a Girl Scout Dad! He was an awesome father and an amazing uncle. Although his presence will be missed beyond measure, know that he is at peace and waiting on the other side with a big smile.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Service with military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78209 at Pavillion 3 on Friday, February 28th, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. Visitation with the family and Celebration of Amar’s Life will begin at home following the ceremony and continue all evening.
