Larry Charles Daugherty

Larry Charles Daugherty, 83, passed away on September 16, 2026, in Provo, Utah due to advanced Parkinson's Disease. He was born August 22, 1943, at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton, Washington, to Leon Calvin Daugherty and Patsi Jane Lewis. He was their only child.

During his childhood, Larry moved often - as frequently as three or four times a year due to his father's work with the Federal Aviation Administration. One of those moves brought his family to Dubois, Idaho, where the family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Family lore holds that when it came time to leave Dubois, the whole town gathered to sing them off with "God Be With You Till We Meet Again," a story told and retold in the family ever since.

Larry grew to love his church deeply and later served a mission in the Northwest States. He went on to attend Brigham Young University, earning a double major in history and business. While in college, he drove a school bus part-time. Well into his advanced years, he spoke of this job as his favorite of his life. Indeed, he could scarcely see a school bus without tearing up.

Larry was drafted into the United States Army, serving from September 1968 to April 1970 and rising to the rank of Sergeant (E-5) . It was a chapter of his life that shaped him profoundly, though he rarely spoke of it. Only while writing this obituary did his children learn from official military records the list of accolades awarded to him: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal, ARCOM 1st OLC. After his service, he suffered a service-related abscess on his brain, requiring five surgeries. The last of these surgeries required a craniotomy that removed part of his temporal bone and temporal lobe, leaving him with epilepsy that would affect his employment and his personality for the rest of his life. His seizures remained poorly controlled for many years, and it was only later in life that he was able to hold a driver's license again. This loss of autonomy weighed on him deeply, having once owned a prized 1957 Chevy as a young man.

Larry went on to a career in government employment, where he spent many years helping retirees navigate their Social Security benefits. After retirement, he volunteered for many years at the Bishop's Storehouse in Kent, Washington.

Larry dearly loved football, especially his beloved Boomer Sooners. He was once an avid NFL fan as well, though he stopped watching professional football once players began kneeling during the anthem, and never watched another game.

Larry lived primarily in Bonney Lake, Washington. As his health declined in recent years, he transitioned to assisted living and, eventually, a group home. Moving to a group home meant giving up his beloved cat, “Garfield,” who his kids joked could be confused with a baby tiger due to his size. In early 2026, he relocated to Provo, Utah to be near family. Staff at all centers consistently raved about Larry as “their favorite resident,” remembering him as a truly sweet man.

He was married to Jane Oneta Via from 1972 to 1992. He later married Margaret "Peggy" Ruth Jernigan in 2004, who preceded him in death in August 2022.

Larry is survived by his children: Wendy (Mark) Attinger, Jeanette Nalley Stampo-Trammell (Tim), Kristy (Paul) Oblad, Rebecca (Joseph) Johansen, Larry Calvin (Prairie) Daugherty, Heather (Chris) Woffinden, Sarah (Andrew) Sargent and stepchildren Fred (Paula) Lott and Jim (Joy) Jernigan, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Peggy; his daughter, Carolyn Jane Daugherty (1968–2003); and his daughter, Nicole Daugherty (1980).

Larry will be cremated per his pre-arranged wishes and interred with his wife Peggy. A private service will be held for family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local animal shelter (or adopt a cat!).
