Rex was born and raised in Tulsa, OK and played
baseball and football for Webster High School,
Coffeeville Jr. College and earned his Bachelor of
Science degree from Kansas University.
Rex spent his career in the aviation industry, initially
working as a private airplane salesman for Beechcraft.
He spent time as a flight instructor prior to starting his
commercial airline career with Mohawk Airlines. He
hired-on at Pan American Airlines in 1965 and retired
as a Captain in 1991.
Rex’s family and friends enjoyed his guitar and
ukulele playing and singing. He was an avid golfer
and historian, tennis player and world traveler.
Rex was preceded in death by his mother and father,
Retta and Fred Smith, one brother and sister-in-law, J.
Fred and Francis Smith and his wife Deirdre
Browne-Smith.
Rex is survived by his 3 daughters, Lezlie Daugherty
and husband Randy, Lori Barnett and husband Rick
and Louann McKinnon and husband Andy; four
grandchildren, Sara Barnett, Kristen Gersonde and
husband Matt, Katlynn McNeff and husband Mark and
Connor McKinnon; five great-grandchildren, Anna
Gersonde, Caleb Gersonde, Everlee McNeff, Elijah
McNeff and Hayden; two nephews, Val Smith of Tulsa,
OK and Bob Smith of San Ramon, CA.
His family and friends will miss his talent, his
knowledge, his wisdom, his stories, his sense of
humor and his often unsolicited advice.
His family would like to express their appreciation for
the kindness extended by neighbors and dear friends.
At his request no memorial service will be held.
