Tom Heflin was born on July 18, 1934, to Mary Heflin in Monticello Arkansas. He peacefully departed after a short illness surrounded by family on April 29, 2023. His family was by his side, and they enjoyed singing old favorites for the last time. Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Hugh Heflin and is survived by his sister Charlotte Ellena. The youngest of 3 children, Tom demonstrated very early his interest in fine art. He was always drawing during class and was frequently reprimanded for doing so. One teacher was a profound influence and encouraged his art by making sure he had supplies and the time to nurture his natural gift, and the rest is history.
Family was everything to Tom. Summers were spent at the farmhouse studio. He treasured walking in the woods, fishing, and spending time outdoors with his children. Nature was always a big influence in his work, even his abstract paintings would still have some relationship to our earth.
The people of Tom’s hometown of Rockford, Illinois and surrounding communities continually came to his exhibits for more than 50 years and made it possible for him and his family to realize a dream come true. Tom was an award-winning artist whose paintings have been featured at exhibitions in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Dallas, and numerous other cities throughout the United States, and around the world. Two collections of his paintings and writings have been published: Quiet Places and Roots and Wings; and he was an award-winning illustrator of a children’s book, The First Forest. He’s won numerous awards in places like National Park Academy of the Arts, Arts for the Parks National, Lotus Club in NY, The Artist magazine, International Society of Acrylic Painters, International Association of Pastel Societies, Ellis Island Museum, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Art Dumond of Japan, The Frye Museum of Seattle, and Greenwich Workshop National.
He was a devoted son, brother, and a loving father, who always encouraged a love of nature, the earth and imagination. Preceded by death, he is survived by his sons, Mark (Theresa), Eron, and daughters, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Sarah Heflin Lyons (McReskar), Sienna (daughter) and Kane (son) and 7 grandchildren Ashley, Brenna, Zane, Evangeline, Wyatt, Sinclaire, and Grayson and 2 great-grandchildren.
There will be a private ceremony with immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Tom’s memory to the Rockford Art Museum.
