Stuart Freeman Roach

Stuart F. Roach, 71, of Belvidere, IL passed away peacefully on Thursday morning February 11, 2021. Stu and his twin brother Steve were born on April 14, 1949, son of Russell and Donna Roach. He graduated from North Boone High School in the class of 1967. He later served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as part of the 669th Transportation Company and earned an Expert Marksmanship Badge, a Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and two overseas service bars.

After returning home he began to grow his family of six children and worked at Northern Illinois University in Materials Management for 19.5 years. He retired in 2013 and began living what his children considered the best years of his life.

Stu was an artist. He excelled at drawing and inking, and all his children can share memories of watching Dad “work” at his drafting table for hours at a time. During retirement he dedicated more time and energy than ever before to practicing and refining his talent. His advancement was notable, and work was admired by many. He was most passionate about drawing comics, cartoons, and caricatures. During retirement he also discovered his passion for photography and would drive hours exploring the countryside to photograph and document historic barns in the region.

Beyond his love for art, and the Green Bay Packers, he was smitten by his children and 11 grandchildren. From band concerts, to cheer competitions and birthday parties, or just a routine video call to watch his “grand babies” play, he always made the time and effort for them. He showed his love often.

He was admired most for his jovial personality, big laugh, and telling jokes. His life is validated by his children, his grandchildren he loved so much, and his artwork, that will transcend his time with us.

Stu, Dad, Grandpa, Friend. We will miss you every day and reflect on the laughs, karaoke songs, and good times we shared.

He is survived by his siblings Linda Johnson (Ron), Steve Roach (Becky), Susie Sullivan, Jim Roach (Vicki), John Roach, Brian Roach (Sam), his children Katherine Roach, Jason Roach (Rachel), Jennee Kolthoff (Jason), Jonathan Roach (Kyla), Justin Roach (Jill), Amanda Roach, and his grandchildren, Noah & Ava (Katherine), Violet, Elliot, Grace and Sophia (Jason), Nathan, Madelyn, Abigail, and Lucas (Jennee), Maggie (Jonathan), and Camden & Kaley (Justin).

Instead of a service the family will be holding a private celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Stu’s name to St. Judes Children Hospital at StJudes.org.
