Ronald married Janet Peterson on June 9, 1962, and they were married 62 years.
Ronald is survived by his daughters; Ginger Wienke Watkins (David) Watkins, Dawn Skinner, and Christina Bartels. He was a proud Grandfather (Papa) to Sonya (DeCarlus) King, Daniel & Abby Skinner, Jessica & Andrew Pendergast, and Nathan, Elijah, Janoah, Isaiah, & Ezekiel Bartels. A blessed Great Grandfather (Papa) to Demyan & Maya King. He is also survived by his sister Nancy (Randy) Hall of Arden Hills MN and nieces Janelle (Ben) Anderson, Jolene (deceased) Mike McGregor and Julie (Brad) Westly.
Ron was a 1958 graduate of Bradford High School in Kenosha WI. He received his Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education from Trinity College, Deerfield IL in 1967, and received his Masters Degree in Education from National Louis University, Evanston IL in 1990. He began in a very different direction of what he became, but found his passion as a 7th grade English teacher in Deerfield where he worked for 32 years. Retiring in 2000 but going back to sub for several more years.
He found his joy through his students through literature. Also became a track coach, girls basketball coach, and went on many school trips to D.C. and other adventures.
Ronald greatly enjoyed adventures. Bicycling cross country, he rode in Ragbrai, Iowa. Traveled to 49 states, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand with his wife. Spent 3 months of the year as snowbirds in Arizona. And so many more special trips along the way.
If you didn't know him through Deerfield or family, you may have seen him running 6 miles a day and his later years walking those 6 miles a day on the same route through Grayslake, picking up pennies along the way.
Ron was an extremely supportive Grandfather and Great Grandfather, always there to cheer them on in school activities, sports, and other life events.
Ron was an extrovert, willing to chat with just about anyone. He loved regaling them with old stories, sports (always representing some Chicago or Wisconsin team), music, travel, and much more. He was a true “one of a kind”, adored by many and will be greatly missed.
A service of remembrance will be held at Village Church of Gurnee, Gurnee IL on Saturday, March 22nd, 2025 at 11am, with visitation one hour prior and dessert following the service.
