Robert “Bob” Schmidt , 91, of Mundelein Illinois, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2025. Born on May 8, 1933, on a farm near Rolfe, Iowa, Bob lived a life full of hard work, dedication, and love for his family. He was the son of Mike and Marie Schmidt and grew up working on the family farm before pursuing his education and a lifelong career.
Bob graduated from Rolfe High School, and soon after, he attended Iowa State College in Ames, where he earned a degree in Farm Operations. In 1953, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas in Japan. He was honorably discharged on July 7, 1956, and returned home to continue his education. He enrolled at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and received his business degree in July 1958.
While working for Armstrong Tire Company, Bob met Shirley, the love of his life. They were married on February 14, 1960, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and soon began their family. Tragically, their first son, Barry, was killed in a car accident in July 1965. Despite this heartbreaking loss, they went on to have two more children, Bradley (born July 1966) and Shelli (born May 1969).
In 1964, Bob joined IMC Fertilizer, where he would dedicate nearly 30 years of his life. His leadership and expertise led him to the role of Vice President of Domestic Sales for North America, from which he retired in 1993. Throughout his career, Bob earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike.
Bob and Shirley lived in Minnesota and Iowa before settling in northern Illinois, where they raised their children. He was a devoted father and grandfather, and his family was his greatest joy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley; son Bradley and wife Kristin Schmidt; daughter Shelli and husband Don Grons; grandchildren Benjamin and Carly Schmidt, and Paige and Jordan Grons; and hundreds of extended family members and friends who will miss him deeply.
A memorial service to celebrate Bob’s life will be held on Friday January 17th at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Libertyville, Illinois. Visitation will begin at 3:30 followed by the service at 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation (t2t.org) or the local Chicago Honor Flight (honorflightchicago.org).
Bob will be remembered for his wisdom, warmth, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the lessons he imparted.
