

Robert Myron Clampitt of Gurnee passed away on June 25, 2026 at home at the age of 94. He was born December 31, 1931 in Detroit, MI to the late Thomas Myron Clampitt and Doris Julia Clampitt. He graduated from Denby High School and received a B.A. from Wayne State University. He entered the United States Navy in 1954 and was commissioned as a naval aviator in 1956. After active duty in Hawaii, Louisiana, Guantanamo Bay and Detroit, he continued his service in the Naval Air Reserve in Glenview, IL. In 1966 he began a distinguished flying career with United Airlines. A captain for many years, he flew both domestic and international routes until he retired in 1990.
Robert loved visiting the great European capitals. He had a passion for literature, art and especially classical music. He was an accomplished piano player. He also enjoyed woodworking, including building harpsichords.
Robert will be remembered most for being a kind and loving husband and father, grandfather and brother with a gentle nature and a great sense of humor.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Thomas Marshall. He is survived by his beloved wife, Debra and his daughter Carol and her mother, Lillian. He is survived by two brothers, James Clampitt (Karen) and Patrick Clampitt (the late Pam), two sisters, Doris Jean Clampitt and Carol Fletcher (David), three grandsons, David (Naomi) Joseph (Rachel) and Robert (Marie) Long, and 13 great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Advocate Dr Nahlawi, Dr. Munir, and Dr Prescott for years of quality care and Dr Mensing for helping us through difficult decisions. And very special thanks to Advocate Condell Hospice Team Red for their help, compassion and devotion.
