PLACIDO YBANEZ DOSDOS
March 15, 1930 – July 6, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Placido Ybanez Dosdos, a beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend. He passed away on July 6, 2026, at St. Francis Hospital at the age of 96. His extraordinary life was a testament to love, resilience, faith, generosity, and the enduring value of family and education.
Placido, lovingly known as "Ceding" and affectionately called "Noy Ceding," was born on March 15, 1930, in Tabogon, Cebu, Philippines. He was the second of nine children born to Antero and Alicia Dosdos.
Raised in humble circumstances, Placido's determination to pursue an education was remarkable. He often went to school with very little food, few clothes, no electricity at home, and no transportation. On rainy days, he worried because he had only one set of clothes to wear. Without a watch, he relied on the position of the sun to tell the time. Through every hardship, his mother, Alicia, encouraged him to value education and persevere.
His dedication paid off. Placido completed three years of law school and graduated with honors with a Bachelor's Degree in Customs Administration in Cebu, Philippines. He went on to dedicate 40 years of distinguished service as a Customs Assessor at Mactan International Airport, earning the respect of colleagues and the community.
Beyond his profession, Placido lived a full and vibrant life. He had a lifelong passion for automobiles, owning jeepneys for hire, operating a taxi business, and using his own private jeep to tend his farm, where he harvested bananas and coconuts. He was a champion bowler and ping pong player, an enthusiastic dancer, enjoyed raising poultry, and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Whether working on his farm, competing in sports, or celebrating with family and friends, Placido embraced life with energy, joy, and a generous spirit.
In 2005, Placido immigrated to the United States, where he embraced his new community with the same joyful spirit. He became one of the oldest and most active members of the Levy Senior Center through the Chicago Department on Aging. He enthusiastically participated in cultural celebrations, including Halloween and St. Patrick's Day events, and became well known for hosting his annual birthday celebrations at the senior center, complete with a live DJ, music, dancing, and fellowship.
Placido also enjoyed traveling. He visited South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines, both independently and with family, and cherished trips throughout the United States, including visits to California and St. Louis, Missouri.
Above all, Placido devoted his life to his family. He believed deeply in the importance of education, hard work, kindness, and helping others. His wisdom, generosity, and unwavering love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Placido was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria Dosdos, who passed away in November 1984. He is also reunited in eternal life with his parents, Antero and Alicia Dosdos; his brothers Fr. Dosdos, Dodo, Dr. Dosdos, and Manuel; and his sisters Wilda and Anastasia.
He is lovingly survived by his children, Nelson and Gigi; his two sisters; many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to his special friends, Poe, Hugo and John, whose love and companionship brought comfort as they remained by his side during his final hours.
Though our hearts are filled with sorrow, we are grateful for the blessing of Placido's long and meaningful life. His legacy of perseverance, compassion, faith, and love will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know him.
