Mary Hughes Kober, 85, of Highwood, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, surrounded by family. She is survived by her children George (Carla Moran) Kober, Ruth (Todd) Gheysen, and Katherine Kober; grandchildren Katie Gheysen and Zachary and Rowan Kober-Cunningham; and brother Marvin (Kathy) Hughes. She was predeceased by her husband Dale Philip Kober.
Mary was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. She met Dale while working on her Masters in Madison, Wisconsin, and they were married in August of 1965. Mary and Dale made their home in Highland Park, Illinois. Mary paused her career to stay home with her children, but eventually returned to teaching elementary school music and retired from North Chicago Schools.
Throughout her life, Mary was known for her warmth, humor, resilience, and deep love for the things and people she cherished. Mary was a devoted mother and loyal friend who enjoyed spending time with those close to her. She delighted in hosting gatherings and often surprised her dinner guests with new recipes. She had a special bond with her cats, especially Nicky, her steadfast companion after Dale's passing and throughout her many health challenges later in life. Mary was a long-time member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, and for many years, sang in the choir and carefully curated the Treasures Room for their annual rummage sale. Outside of church, she found additional fellowship and community as a Red Hat Lady and member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. Mary was an avid reader, adapting to her changing vision in later years by switching to audiobooks, which she enjoyed immensely. She was a Girl Scout leader when her daughters were young and an enthusiastic gardener and a joyful collector of many things throughout her life. She had a talent for playing the piano, a beautiful singing voice, and adored the music of Judy Garland—whose songs filled many family road trips. Although she always considered Chicago her home, Estes Park, Colorado, and Rocky Mountain National Park held a special place in Mary's heart. Above all, Mary was a devoted grandmother. Her pride and love for her grandchildren knew no bounds, and she would happily share stories of their accomplishments with anyone who would listen. Mary will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, 330 Laurel Avenue, Highland Park, Illinois, on October 4, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. A small reception to follow. All are welcome. A private interment will be held at a later date at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park in Zion, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Highland Park Presbyterian Church or the American Diabetes Association.
