Leo was born in Woonsocket, South Dakota on June 7, 1936, to Saras and Adeline (McCoy) Oas. He grew up in Maple Lake and graduated from Make Lake High School with the Class of 1954. Leo attended Dunwoody Technical Trade School in 1956 - 1958 and was hired by IBM in 1958. During his time at IBM, he was drafted into the Army in 1959 and served 2 years at Fort Sam Houston, Texas where he received the Sharpshooter Badge for rifle and carbine, as well as the Good Conduct Medal. He returned to IBM in 1961 where he dedicated himself to providing customers with the best service, always with a smile, for 34 years. On November 25, 1965, he was united in marriage to Diane Bolyard, and moved to New Ulm, Minnesota where they raised their two children. Leo was a deeply religious person, with a strong faith in the Lord. He went to mass every day he was able and served the Lord in any way he could. Leo enjoyed spending time with family and friends; he enjoyed taking pictures, acting silly, and being present in the moment.
He always left an impression on the people he met as a friendly, kind-hearted person. He was generous and encouraging, with a special gift of touching the hearts of those around him. He had a natural gift of always finding the positive in people. He had an unending love of his family, friends, and of God. He dedicated himself to serving the Lord, answering the call to service.
Leo is survived by his wife of 55 years, Diane; two children, Susan (William) Heckman of West Palm Beach and Michael (Caroline) Oas of Grayslake; siblings, Teresa (Clancy) Campbell of Winsted, Ginny Marquette of Buffalo, and Denny (Judy) of Victoria; as well as grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many close friends. Leo was predeceased by parents, Saras and Adeline Oas.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of St. Peter in Mendota Heights, MN on Wednesday, July 28, 2021. There will be a committal service at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Thursday, July 29, 2021.
Life Well Lived
A life well lived is a precious gift,
Of hope and strength and grace,
From someone who has made our world
A brighter, better place.
It’s filled with moments, sweet and sad
With smiles and sometimes tears,
With friendships formed and good time shared,
And laughter through the years.
A live well lived is a legacy,
Of joy and pride and pleasure,
A living, lasting memory
Our grateful hearts will treasure.
