Jocelyn Louise (Thorwall) Shaffer (known to most as “Lynn”) was born September 28, 1953 in Chicago, IL. She died November 21, 2017 in Algonquin, Illinois after a ten-month battle with cancer. She was 64 years old.
Lynn was the third child and only daughter of Rev. Lareau and Wanda Merle Thorwall. She spent her growing up years in Colorado, Nebraska and then the family returned to the Chicago area where Lynn graduated from Wheaton North High School in 1971. Lynn is a graduate of Trinity Western Jr. College in British Columbia and Trinity International University in Illinois. She also had one year of seminary studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
Lynn became a follower of Jesus Christ at a very early age and her child-like faith in Christ grew and influenced every aspect of her life. Much of her adult life has been spent serving in full time ministry. She was a missionary in Germany for many years until she met and married Tim Shaffer in 1989. Tim was an American musician working in Germany. When the couple returned to the States in 1995, Lynn became Director of Children’s Ministries at the Wheaton (Illinois) Evangelical Free Church. In 2006, Lynn joined the staff of Judson University in Elgin, Illinois eventually becoming the executive assistant to the Dean of the School of Business and Professional Studies. She saw her work at Judson as ministry as well, and poured her love and concern into the lives of the students and staff in her area.
Lynn Shaffer is survived by her loving husband, Tim; her mother, Wanda Merle Thorwall; her brothers, Brenton (Vicki) Thorwall and Keven (Liz) Thorwall; six nephews and nieces, Kara, Drew (Melissa), Sean Thorwall; Jason (Jen) Thorwall, Britt (Andrew) Faris, and Morgan Thorwall; and six great-nieces and nephews, Belle, Obed, Axel, and Simeon Thorwall; Brooke and Alexa Thorwall.
