Jan was born in St. Louis, Missouri to George H. and Stella M. Smith. She was happily married to her husband, Richard C. “Rich” Ortwerth, for over 71 years. She dedicated her life to her family, friends, faith, and community, where she built a legacy of love, joy, and happiness for which she will always be remembered.
Jan had more energy than ten people and a meticulous nature that made her unforgettable. Throughout her long and active life, she devoted herself to her family and raising her four children. After Rich’s retirement, the two volunteered for many years at the Schaumburg Park District and embarked on road trips across the United States, collecting treasures along the way and decorating their home with memories of their travels. She loved being outside in the sunshine, particularly in her colorful, beautifully landscaped yard, and nothing brought her greater joy than time spent with family and friends.
Jan put her family above all else. She took immense pride in celebrating every milestone, with a camera in hand, capturing every moment and beaming with pride. She had a gift for making others feel special, whether by holding your hand, listening to your stories with rapt enthusiasm, hosting family gatherings for holidays and special occasions, or simply offering a warm hug.
Jan’s family remembers her fondly as a devoted, caring, affectionate, and exceptionally loving woman—full of energy, unwavering in her support, and passionate about embracing all that life had to offer.
She is survived by four children: Rick (Patti) Ortwerth, Ron (Trudy) Ortwerth, Jenna Stasinos, and Sheila (Don) Bragg; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; her brother, George (Marilyn) Smith; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; her sister, Illeane F. Smith; her brother, Clarence R. Smith; and her sons-in-law, Greg Stasinos and Bill Hitchings.
Though she will be deeply missed, her love and light will live on in our hearts. We love you, Jan.
