Jim was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on May 26, 1941. He graduated from Ascension Grammar School and Fenwick High School, both in Oak Park. He received his Bachelors Degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Jim served in the army honorably during the Vietnam conflict, as a First Lieutenant in the Military Police attached to the 82nd Airborn Division, state-side at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland.
Jim and his wife, Annette, with their family, lived in Northbrook, Illinois, for 50 years. They were active members of Saint Catherine Laboure Parish in Glenview, Illinois. He was owner/dealer and president of McInerney Chevrolet in Chicago for over 20 years. This business was originally established in the 1930s by Jim’s grandfather, the late Judge James McInerney and was maintained by his father and uncles. Jim was a past president of the Chicago Dealers Association and represented Chevrolet on the board of the Chicago Automobile Dealers Trade Association(CATA) for nine years. Always the ultimate salesman, after retirement Jim sold cars part time for Foley Chevrolet in Northbrook, then worked part time in the Men’s Suit Department at Macy’s Northbrook
Court where he consistently opened, by far, the most charge accounts in the entire district.
Jim will be remembered for his extreme generosity, his patriotism, his sense of humor, and his naturally incredible ability to make everyone laugh. He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears and an avid Chicago White Sox fan. He was a member and supporter of the North Suburban YMCA in Northbrook, a member for many years of The Red Cloud Athletic Club, benefitting Native Indian Children living on reservations, and The American Legion. Jim actively supported his wife’s active participation in The Caritas Society, originally the Auxillary of The Joseph P. Kennedy Jr School for Exceptional Children.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin J. and Helen Webber McInerney. Survivors are: his wife of 58 years, Annette Holder McInerney, sons James B. (Wendy) and William Owen McInerney, daughter Sheila Katsafaros (Jim), grandsons Michael and Dylan McInerney, and many cousins and good friends.
For memorials in Jim’s memory, the family suggests The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Saint Jude’s Hospital for Children in Memphis, or a charity of your choice.
