He was born on July 22nd, 1936 in West Berlin to parents Max and Elsa Langer. After being awarded his first cosmetology license there as a young man, he emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Evanston.
He immediately built up a large and devoted clientele working at a couple of local Salons. Then, because of his quick success and savvy business sense, he achieved his first career milestone. His own Salon, The Lorelei, in downtown Evanston. It was an extraordinary accomplishment, and was a respected fixture in Evanston for many many years. The Chicago Tribune published an article chronicling Helmut's impressive story.
When not seeing clients or managing his business, Helmut greatly enjoyed entertaining and socializing with his many friends and neighbors. He took a special interest in gardening, planting flowers and other greenery in the courtyard of his small condo building, creating a peaceful sanctuary for all.
Helmut was a great music lover. He held a subscription to the Lyric Opera, and often invited friends to join him for performances. He was a very talented painter, and studied painting avidly. Everyone looked forward to receiving his Christmas cards, which were printed from his original work. A few of his friends are lucky to have a framed original hanging in their homes.
Helmut was truly a remarkable man. His thoughtful kindness went hand in hand with his charming German accent and easy laugh. His unfailingly positive outlook on life was a gift to all. His death leaves a deep gap in the community of his neighbors and friends, who all feel fortunate to have known this fine, gentle man.
Helmut is survived by his dear great nephew Marco Langer.
A Celebration of Helmut's life will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Thursday, May 18th, 2023 at the Wilmette Harbor Club, 20 Harbor Drive, Wilmette, IL (across from the Baháʼí temple).
