George John Schmid, 87, of Arlington Heights, IL, passed away on September 6, 2023. Born on March 28, 1936, in Oak Park, IL, George was a loving and caring individual, with a strong devotion to his family.
George was a graduate of Fenwick High School and DePaul University with a degree in accounting.
George began his career at Price Waterhouse during which he received his CPA license. He also served on the executive teams of Fern International and TFI Companies. George rounded out his career as CEO of Kiehl Engineering from 1975 until his retirement in 2000. Of his many titles, he was most proud of being lovingly known as Grandpa Choo Choo by his grandchildren.
George met the love of his life, Jean, while at DePaul and they married in 1962.
He was an active member of St. Edna Catholic Church in Arlington Heights where he volunteered in numerous roles including the stewardship committee, usher and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
In his free time, George was avid train collector / historian and author / editor of several books on Lionel Trains. He also enjoyed traveling around the world, reading and watching baseball. Above all, George loved spending time with his family.
George is survived by his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Jean and parents.
Services and interment are private.
