Born May 9, 1943, in Beckley, WV, to Clyde and Blanche DeHart, David was the youngest son of a devoted family, growing up alongside his four siblings, Bernard Edward, James, Betty Sue and Patricia.
David proudly served his country for 32 years, dedicating a significant portion of his life to the U.S. Marine Corps. He served during the Vietnam War as an aircraft maintenance technician with the Marines' 1st Air Wing Division, VMA 533 at Chu Lai. After serving 9 years in active duty he served more than two decades in the Marine Corps Reserves. He honorably retired as a Master Gunnery Sergeant, exemplifying the leadership and dedication that characterized his military career.
Deeply engaged in his community, David took great pride in coaching his daughters’ softball teams and was a co-founder of the Mundelein Fast Pitch Softball league, a vibrant organization that continues to foster young talent and where his granddaughter now carries on the tradition as a coach.
An avid car enthusiast, David took great pleasure showcasing his beloved 1964 Dodge at the many car shows where he became a regular. After his retirement, he participated with the local veterans group, Cup of Joe, every Tuesday. Most mornings, you could find him at the local coffee shop, eating a chocolate donut and enjoying conversations with dear friends.
David is survived by his loving wife, Jo Ann, and his devoted daughters, Patricia DeHart (Erik Stein) and Sharon Adams (Tony). He was a proud grandfather to three grandchildren: Anthony Adams, David (Maddie) Adams, and Breanna Adams and two great grandchildren, Rowan James and Lyla Rose Adams. David’s warmth, love, and boundless spirit have left an indelible mark on the lives of all who knew him. As we remember him, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, love, and commitment to family and community.
